About the Author
Max Euwe (1901-1981) was the fifth world chess champion. He won the title from Alekhine in 1935 but was defeated in the rematch two years later. He wrote extensively on chess theory and openings and was one of the most respected playersof his day.

A great book I am happy to own.

One of the greatest and most consequential tournaments of all time.

Most great tournaments feature great players playing together. But this one was for the World Chess Championship. Mikhail Botvinnik, Vasily Smyslov, Samuel Reshevsky, Paul Keres and Max Euwe were considered the best in the world. Although one could argue Reuben Fine (who was invited but chose to pursue his studies in psychology) and David Bronstein should have also played the field was still very credible.

Every one of the players was at some point in time over the past 15 years, before and after, was considered or will be considered to be the best in the world. Euwe was a former World Champion, Botvinnik and Smyslov were to become world champions. Fischer considered Reshevsky to be the best player in the world in the late 50s. Keres would find himself playing the in the next 6 Candidates Tournaments.

Not a lot of draws, mostly wins and losses. Superbly annotated by Euwe, the notes were a revelation and joy to read.

A landmark moment in chess history

A landmark moment in chess history: a tournament fought by five top grandmasters to determine the world champion; and, the establishment of FIDE as the world chess organization. GM Euwe, both a participant and a former world champion, was one of the best chess writers and analysts of all time. Truly, a book that every serious chess student must own and study.

Classic book of a classic tournament

This was a historic tournament, starting the FIDE-controlled world championship, replacing the former system where a champion could (and often did) avoid his strongest challengers. Botvinnik deservedly won by a three-point margin, which should have surprised no-one becaus he had won every tournament he played in since 1941, and many were world-class. His domination seemed to herald a dominant reign as world champ, but as we now know, he never won a match as world champion.

This book is a different order from Golombek's, since it was written by one of the five participants. Unfortunately, Euwe had worn himself out and lost confidence by a too-busy chess schedule in 1947, and was way below form in this tournament. Still, the games were well annotated and objectively assessed, as would be expected from a man who was known for his fairness.

Since Fine withdrew, it was a travesty that he wasn't replaced by Najdorf, who had some brilliant results in the few years before the tournament, especially Prague that was meant to be a qualifier.

Leslie A. Miller, Ph.D., PHR has broad experience in consulting, teaching, and researching in the area of organizational and educational assessment, measurement, and development. Currently the owner of her own consulting business, LanneM TM LLC, she provides her clients with pragmatic and affordable talent management solutions―solutions to help them acquire, develop, and retain the talent they need to achieve desired business results today and in the future. Her expertise includes designing performance improvement/management tools and knowledge tests, customizing and facilitating leadership training programs, providing assessment-based executive coaching, and designing and implementing business impact evaluation and return on value studies. She also spends a significant amount of her time teaching graduate business, organizational  behavior/leadership, and human resource courses at Rollins College and for the School of Advanced Studies at the University of Phoenix as well as mentoring doctoral learners through the dissertation process. Previously the vice president of leadership development/human resources at the Central Florida YMCA, she was responsible for contributing to the strategic plans of the organization by leading the association’s talent management initiatives―recruiting, developing, and retaining the association’s talent. Prior to joining the YMCA, she was employed by Wilson Learning Corporation (WLC), a performance improvement company,where she served as the director of business solutions, a senior project manager, and a business solutions consultant. In these roles, she was responsible for conceptualizing, designing, managing, and implementing traditional and technology-based assessment,measurement, and training performance improvement solutions for client organizations.

Prior to joining WLC, she served as the assistant dean of admissions at Rollins College, where she was also a faculty member of the psychology, organizational behavior, and human resources programs. Before joining Rollins College, she was a senior research psychologist for the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, in Washington, D.C. At the Bureau, she designed, researched, and analyzed the results of some of our nation’s most important surveys. In her current and previous roles, she has worked with various leading organizations in the high-tech, financial, pharmaceutical, and transportation industries. With a Ph.D. in educational psychology from the University of Maryland, she has an extensive list of publications.

Robert L. Lovler, PhD, has over 30 years of experience working both as an internal and external consultant to Fortune 500 companies in the areas of employee assessment and selection, organizational development, strategic human resource consulting, and training design and delivery. His career began at CBS Inc., where he served in several roles, including director of training for the retail consumer electronics unit, then moving up to vice president of two different units within the CBS Publishing Group. He is currently senior vice president of global human resources at Wilson Learning Corporation, an international consulting firm that focuses on human performance improvement. During his career, he has had the opportunity to design and implement a wide range of organizational interventions both domestically and internationally, working in Japan, China, South Korea, Hong Kong, England, and Italy. In the United States, he supervised the development and implementation of the assessment center used to select candidates for entry into the Environmental Protection Agency’s Senior Executive Service Development Program, presenting the results in Washington, D.C., to Christine Todd Whitman, the EPA administrator. He also developed the system used to help select commercial airline pilots for a major U.S. airline and worked with former Senator Warren Rudman to develop and implement a nationwide survey of sales practices in the rent-to-own industry. He has served as a testing consultant to the California Bar Association and the state of Pennsylvania, and he oversaw the development of the licensure examinations for medical physicists in the state of Texas. He has been on the adjunct faculty of the State University of New York at Farmingdale, Hofstra University, and the University of Central Florida. Dr. Lovler received his BA degree in psychology from UCLA and  holds master’s and doctoral degrees from Hofstra University.  He  is a member of the American Psychological Association and the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology.

Dated with poor explanations of important concepts

I am using this book for an undergraduate course in psychological testing and measurements. I would not recommend for a number of reasons. (1) Even though it was updated in 2016, the information provided appears to be dated, relying on classical testing theories rather than contemporary theories. If providing information from the classic-testing perspective, which could be important for historical context, you think it would still be counterbalanced with our more contemporary understanding of the concepts, but it isn't. Which just makes it inaccurate (2) It poorly explains several of the subjects, including how it addresses the different types of validity. This is the cornerstone of testing and measurement. If you get anything right, it really should be the topic of validity. (3) This is the kicker for me, the instructor resources are really terrible. This may actually be more the fault of the publisher, but the instructor resources are about as useful as looking at the content outline at the beginning of the book.

Will not be using again. Will also be better at screening books before I teach this again in the Fall.

Removing mechanical tension interfering with nervous system function

The Australian physiotherapist clinical-researcher David Butler's earlier work in assessing and treating mechanical restrictions of the nervous system, as described in his best-selling book Mobilisation of the Nervous System, has had an enormous influence on manual therapy, world-wide(Butler, 1991). His latest book expands on the developing scientific support for neural mobilization, discussing how manual treatments effect the CNS at the synaptic and molecular level and to evaluate how neurological processing is effected by psychological and physical inputs. What Butler achieves here is a depiction of the CNS in the widest context of neurobiology and its associated research. The integrative model of health care (involving the structural, chemical and emotional triad) is supported with exhaustive but elegantly presented scientific research. The depth of Butler's insights into what manual therapists are doing with and achieving for their clients is astonishing, deserving of detailed study. Why manual therapy works...the bio-psycho-social framework of the answer to that question is richly provided here.

Who Were the Bigger Criminals?

If you happened to be taking a late evening stroll on the night of March 24, 1972 in Laguna Niguel, California, you might have walked past two of the most brilliant, most fearsome, and most elusive bank burglars in all of U.S. history. On that very evening, Amil Dinsio and his brother James were crouching in the bushes on a hill just above the United California Bank. Later, after the grocery and drug stores closed, after the bank’s cleaning crew left, they would break into the heart of the bank — the vault — on a mission to steal thirty million dollars belonging to President Nixon. Then for the “cherry on top,” they would loot as many of the personal safety deposit boxes that they could in order to take jewelry, rare coins, bonds, and other valuables they could sell.

The Dinsio brothers had been successfully burglarizing hundreds of banks since they were teens. No one had been able to figure out how they got past the security systems and into the vaults. They were masters at their craft and proud of it. Now for the first time, Amil Dinsio tells all.

“When this is all over, I’ll give you a story. I’ll give you a real story,” Dinsio said to the media back in 1972. The story is now here. You won’t be disappointed. All the details are in this riveting and quick-to-read book. He even includes a detailed illustration showing exactly how they bypassed banks’ alarm systems. At the back are the actual photographs of Amil and James, the ladder going up to the alarm bell, the hole they blasted into the vault, the open safety deposit boxes, and Amil Dinsio’s lovely wife and daughters.

The author also provides a fascinating look inside the mindset of bank burglars. Their justification for stealing Tricky Dick’s money—as well as other banks’ money and the belongings of private citizens—is all explained. He also reveals how they hid the stolen money, and how they were able to spend it without getting caught.

But there’s more to the story. Dinsio and his crew are not the only criminals. What the FBI did to track them down is every bit as devious, dishonest, and illegal. Dinsio challenges you to read the story and then decide for yourself who are the bigger criminals.

I highly recommend this book for an engrossing and spellbinding look into a slice of American history.

They got Nixon, right before Watergate.

I received this as a free ebook in return for writing a frank review.

This was an interesting, but not necessarily a good book. More of a how-to-do it, without really explicit details, it had no real sense of adventure, tension or mystery running throughout. But I always like to read about a real life crime, especially when murder is not the only anchor. I had the feeling that the author did not really have much literary help in writing this book, but he still did a decent job recounting how he, his brother and a group of guys from Cleveland burglarized a small, strip mall bank that appeared to be a prime, susceptible target. As I read this, I often thought about just how predisposed other banks, whether they be big or small, are constructed to protect people’s savings. I have not heard of a bank burglary in a real long time, but I often here of robbery-stickups almost on a regular basis. The guys who pull those types of jobs are often desperate, have no substantive plan and are often caught virtually quickly and nearby their target.

The fact that this story centered on the theft of Nixon’s personal funds of 12 million dollars was the cherry on top of this heisting tale. I enjoyed this, but it is a book that will evaporate from my mind rather quickly. I would rate this 3 solid stars.

Great pictures, but not great writing

This is one of the very first book I bought on De Stijl, and I have bought many since and I am trying to review all the ones I have bought on Amazon so far.

I would really not recommend this particular book, however, unless you are a college professor. I have a college degree in English, and I could hardly understand a single point the author was trying to make. His text was bloated on "scholarly" vocabulary (or jargon). It seemed to ramble around and around, trying to make some point about De Stijl in the context of Dutch history, but I really don't think I ever got what the point was.

This is also a small book, so don't expect the pictures to be particularly large.

If you want a quick, interesting look at De Stijl, this is not your book. If you want great pictures of De Stijl classics, this is not your book.

I really expected more from a Thames and Hudson book (I have others published by them, and they are wonderful). But, this one was a miss.

This book provides a comprehensive, self-contained and up-to-date treatment of the main topics in the theory of option pricing. The first part of the text starts with discrete-time models of financial markets, including the Cox-Ross-Rubinstein binomial model. The passage from discrete- to continuous-time models, done in the Black-Scholes model setting, assumes familiarity with basic ideas and results from stochastic calculus. However, an Appendix containing all the necessary results is included. This model setting is later generalized to cover standard and exotic options involving several assets and/or currencies. An outline of the general theory of arbitrage pricing is presented. The second part of the text is devoted to the term structure modelling and the pricing of interest-rate derivatives. The main emphasis is on models that can be made consistent with market pricing practice.

In the 2nd edition, some sections of the former Part I are omitted for better readability, and a brand new chapter is devoted to volatility risk.

In the 3rd printing of the 2nd edition, the second Chapter on discrete-time markets has been extensively revised. Proofs of several results are simplified and completely new sections on optimal stopping problems and Dynkin games are added. Applications to the valuation and hedging of American-style and game options are presented in some detail.

As a consequence, hedging of plain-vanilla options and valuation of exotic options are no longer limited to the Black-Scholes framework with constant volatility.

Part II of the book has been revised fundamentally. The theme of volatility risk appears systematically. Much more detailed analysis of the various interest-rate models is available. The authors' perspective throughout is that the choice of a model should be based on the reality of how a particular sector of the financial market functions. In particular, it should concentrate on defining liquid primary and derivative assets and identifying the relevant sources of trading risk.

yes, but ...

I've been using this book on and off over the last year. At first I was very impressed with the level of detail in the mathematics, especially as it was the only book at the time focussing on risk-neutral methods and covering BGM. But I've become increasing disillusioned with it of late. It's difficult to explain, but although the whole book is written in traditional theorem-proof style, there are no real proofs! (I have a PhD in math and have done research for 10 years so I should know a little about proofs.) The only "proofs" provided are basically symbol shifting, but the heart of the math is strangely absent. This is especially strange given the Springer series in which it appears.
In short, if you want a catalogue of methods this book does the job, but if you want a deeper understanding try Lars Nielsens book.

At the Forefront of Modern Mathematical Finance

This advanced text provides an excellent account of the current state-of-the art of options pricing/hedging models and interest rate term structure models. The book is accessible to both advanced practitioners of mathematical finance as well as to pure researchers in the field.

The book is in written in a mathematical style and contains rigorous proofs of many results. However, the main focus of the text is to describe the frontier of knowledge in the subject. Each section contains copious references to the literature and is so current that several references are to working papers. Many sections detail open problems and other areas suitable for scholarly research.

In their second edition, the authors provide an extremely useful critique of each modeling paradigm that they investigate. They also provide evidence for their position in the form of literature references which instruct the reader as to the shortcomings/limitations of a particular model. This information should prove quite valuable to model practitioners and implementers.

The authors assume an advanced background from the field of stochastic analysis, although they do provide an appendix which summarizes key results needed from the field. For the stochastic calculus prerequisites, I recommend Rogers & Williams Diffusions, Markov Processes, and Martingales: Volume 1, Foundations and Diffusions, Markov Processes and Martingales: Volume 2, Itô Calculus. Suitable prerequisites are also covered by Karatzas and Shreve in Brownian Motion and Stochastic Calculus. A good foundation in arbitrage pricing theory is also needed. I recommend the nice treatment by Bjork in Arbitrage Theory in Continuous Time.

The book is divided into two parts. The first part deals with options pricing in equity markets. Chapter 1 sets premlinaries required for the arbitrage theoretic framework, while Chapter 2 has a very nice treatment of discrete time models and finite financial markets.

In Chapter 3, the authors develop the Black-Scholes model along with the Bachelier model using arbitrage techniques. The models are compared and used as benchmark continuous time models and form the basis for all subsequent analysis.

Chapter 4 provides a nice survey of techniques used to price/hedge options in foreign equity and currency markets. The authors assume familarity of the basic workings of foriegn markets.

Chapter 5 is a terrific chapter on valuing American-style options. The American call option is thoroughly studied and approximation techniques for the American put option are introduced. The explicit derivations of the formulas are referenced to the literature.

Chapter 6 provides an introduction to exotic options, although the authors vary their use of the term 'exotic' to meaning 'not a standard European-style or American-style' in this chapter to meaning 'no readily available liquid market' in Chapter 7. The descriptions are quite accessible and the basic properties of the options are described along with pricing formulas (assuming the Black-Scholes framework).

Chapter 7 provides as complete an accounting as I have ever seen of the generalizations of the Black-Scholes model and motivates this from the point of view of volatility surfaces. Many of the well-known models are studied in detail, such as CEV, local volatility, and mixture models. The strengths and weaknesses of each model are analyzed. The stochastic volatility models of Wiggins (via Orenstien-Uhlenbeck processes), Hull-White, and Heston are studied, as is the SABR model. The chapter wraps up with a study of the SIV models, describes how the stochastic volatility models can be obtained via limits of GARCH models and surveys Jump-diffusion processes and Levy processes.

The second part of the book is concerned with term structure models and interest rate derivatives. The authors are quite well-know for their many contributions to this study and their treatment is authoritative.

I have used this book for two courses in my MSc degree in Financial Maths...well this book is hard to understand at first glance, but, once you are introduced with a good course on stochastic analysis and applied probability, this is an illuminating book...I particularly enjoyed the part on foreing equity derivatives and exotic derivatives.....Harmed with patience this is definitely the book by which you can effectively gain a sound a knowledge on modern mathematical finance theory....reading in conjunction with Bingham-Kiesel book, could help understanding the foundation of the subject.
